UV Index 101: Why SPF 50 Isn't Optional in India

Sunscreen is the one skincare step almost everyone has heard they "should" be doing daily. And yet most people still treat it like an occasional, sunny-day-at-the-beach product rather than a non-negotiable daily layer. In India, that gap between advice and habit is doing real, measurable damage, and the data behind it is worth understanding properly, not just skimming past.
India's UV Index Runs in "Extreme" Territory for Much of the Year
The UV Index (UVI) is a standardized scale, developed by the World Health Organization, that measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface and the resulting risk of skin damage. On the WHO scale, anything above 11 is classified as "extreme." A recent nationwide analysis found that more than 88% of daily UV readings across India came in above 5, with nearly half of all readings (46%) falling into the "high" category of 8–10, before you even factor in cities that regularly push past that into extreme territory. Bengaluru has recorded readings around 13; Chennai regularly sits at 9–10 even before peak summer arrives.
For comparison, most of Europe and North America spend large parts of the year at a UVI of 2–5. India isn't dealing with an occasional spike - it's operating at a baseline that much of the world would consider a heat wave anomaly.
The Melanin Myth That Costs People Real Protection
One of the most persistent misconceptions in Indian skincare is that more melanin means sunscreen is optional, or that a lower SPF is "enough." Research on Indian skin types tells a more precise story: melanin does offer some natural defense, but it's roughly equivalent to only SPF 2–4, nowhere near sufficient against a UV Index of 8-12. Consumer data reflects this gap in understanding directly: while national surveys show meaningful demand for SPF 50 and SPF 50+ products, roughly 4 in 10 sunscreen buyers in India still default to SPF 30, a level that offers real but incomplete protection against India's actual UV conditions.
The result of this mismatch is visible in sunburn data itself. A nationally representative Indian survey found that 65.7% of respondents had experienced sunburn nearly double the equivalent figure in a comparable US study - despite the same survey finding that most respondents reported some sun-safety behaviour, largely physical protection like shade and covered clothing rather than sunscreen. In other words, Indians are protecting themselves more than global stereotypes suggest, but sunscreen specifically remains the weakest link.
What Unprotected UV Exposure Actually Does, Beyond a Sunburn
Sunburn is the visible, short-term signal. The damage that matters more is cumulative and largely invisible until years later.
Photoageing. UVA rays make up roughly 95% of the UV radiation reaching Earth's surface and penetrate deep into the dermis, where they break down collagen and elastin fibres. This process - photoageing - is estimated to be responsible for up to 80% of the visible signs of skin ageing most people attribute to "just getting older": wrinkles, sagging, and age spots.
Pigmentation and uneven tone. Beyond wrinkling, UV exposure is a primary driver of hyperpigmentation and melasma - two of the most common skin concerns reported by Indian dermatology patients, and concerns that sunscreen alone can meaningfully prevent from worsening.
DNA-level damage. A review published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, drawing on World Health Organization data, linked chronic sun exposure and sunburn history to hundreds of thousands of non-melanoma skin cancer cases annually, a reminder that UV damage isn't purely cosmetic, even when the visible signs take years to show up.
PA+++ Matters Just as Much as the SPF Number
Most sunscreen conversations in India stop at the SPF number, but SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, the ones responsible for sunburn. It says nothing about UVA protection, which is where the bulk of photoageing and pigmentation damage originates. That's what the PA rating (Protection Grade of UVA) is for, scaled from PA+ to PA++++. A sunscreen with a high SPF but no meaningful PA rating is only doing half the job. For India's UV conditions, broad-spectrum protection, a high SPF paired with PA+++ or higher, isn't a premium upgrade; it's the baseline that matches what the UV Index here actually demands.
Reapplication Is the Step Almost Everyone Skips
Even among people who apply sunscreen in the morning, reapplication through the day is where most protection quietly lapses, particularly relevant in India, where peak UV exposure runs from 10 am to 4 pm, overlapping with most people's entire working day, commute included. A single morning application does not carry meaningful protection through eight-plus hours of outdoor and near-window exposure.
