What Hard Water Actually Does to Your Skin

A systematic review and meta-analysis pooling multiple studies found a positive association between living in a hard water area and developing atopic eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) in children, with the association holding across a hardness range of roughly 76 to over 350 mg/L of calcium carbonate. Separate research has also shown that hard water lowers the skin's surface pH, which further compromises how effectively the barrier functions.
It compounds with everything else your skin is exposed to. Because a hard-water-stressed barrier is already more permeable and more inflamed, it becomes more reactive to pollution particles, UV exposure, and even active ingredients in your other skincare products - meaning hard water rarely acts alone.
